It's criminals trying to get IN, rather than get OUT that has O-U's Office of Information and technology worried. There's been an increase in email scams getting through to students and faculty in the last week. Athens MidDay reporter Pat Henderson is live in the newsroom to tell us what to watch out for.

That's right Mary, the Office of Information and technology says there have been several phishing attacks on O-U's email system. The attacks are designed to trick you .. to get you give the scammer your user name and password.

The scammers then take your information and either sell it or use your email account to send spam messages. Information Technology Communications Manager Sean O'Malley says these types of attacks are pretty common, but the O-I-T usually catches them before they get to students and faculty. O'Malley says it's a coincidence that this is happening during the University's transition to catmail. He says the university never asks for private information...

<we will never ask you to send us your password, and we will never ask you to open an attachment. So if you get an email that looks like its from one of us and its asking for one of those things.... You can be sure it didn't come from us and you should ignore it or forward it to [email protected]>
