LIVE INTRO: [TAKE: LIVE] {***LIVE NEWSROOM PAT***}
Thanks Stephanie, As temperatures start to drop ... ODOT workers are busy getting ready for the winter chill. They are checking snow plow engines and doing dry runs to make sure they are ready for the season, but that's not all...
PACKAGE: [TAKE PKG] {***PKG***} [TAKE SOT NAME: Rose 1 INCUE: besides checking OUTCUE: when the snow hits AT: 50:14 TO: 50:27 DURATION:0:13] {***SOT FULL***} [CG :Std Lower 3rd\Bracing for Winter \MARIETTA, OH] <besides checking and doing maintenance on the snow plows, we make sure that we have enough salt, enough tonnage, we make sure that we have enough salt brine and then we go around the routes and kind of prepare ourselves for when the snow hits.>
ODOT 10th district public information officer David Rose says when the first snow hits - district 10 will have 123 fully functional plow trucks. The trucks maintain more than 4,000 miles of state highway in Southeastern Ohio. ODOT workers are looking at new ways to take care of roads that will save money. One of these new methods --spraying the road with a salt water primer to prepare for icy conditions.
[TAKE SOT NAME: Rose 2 INCUE: we lay that down OUTCUE: melt more efficiently AT: 56:05 TO: 56:22 DURATION:0:17] {***SOT FULL***} [CG :Std Lower 3rd\David Rose \ODOT DISTRICT 10] <We lay that down as a pretreatment and it really really - in the research we've done in our test labs - they found out that it really helps kind of prepare the surface so when we put down the mix of the sand and the salt it really allows it to penetrate the snow and melt more efficiently.>
District 10 used fourty-seven percent less salt in the 2008-2009 winter season, and they say they hope to continue to lower salt use to save tax payers money. Rose says that each ODOT garage in Southeastern Ohio has about 300 tons of salt. He also says a good way to find out what's going on with roads during bad weather is by visiting ODOT's traffic website.
[TAKE SOT NAME: Rose 3 AT: 53:01 DURATION:0:11] {***SOT FULL***} <you'll find out how much snow has fallen, where our crews are currently, how much of our crew is out right now. So it allows people to kind of plan, allows them to manage their time better. Be safe and know which routes to take.>
LIVE TAG: [TAKE: LIVE] {***LIVE NEWSROOM PAT***} Rose says that you can prepare for icy conditions, too. He says you should get your car inspected, check the air in your ties, make sure your headlights are on while driving ... and remember to be patient. Reporting live from the newsroom, I'm Pat Henderson.
